Year 4 were VERY busy on Friday, performing experiments with marbles and rulers! What did these things have to do with 'Space' and 'The Planets'????
Using some of the scientific language you used on Friday, explain what you were doing! (I only got a glimpse when I popped in - Mrs M!)

Group 3’s crater experiment on Friday we did an experiment trying to make a model of a rock hitting a planet we used :
A metre ruler
A 30cm ruler
A video camera
A digital camera
An ice-cream tub
Flour
Marbles
First we measured 0.05m into the ice-cream container and poured the flour up to the mark. Then we smoothed the flour out with a ruler or our hands.
After that we got the marbles and videoed the marble being dropped from 0.60m and it made a 1cm hole .Then we dropped the marble from 0.80m and it made a 2cm hole .After that we did it with a 1m ruler and it made a 5cm hole and then we recorded it all and then we were finished.
On Friday we did a crater experiment trying to model a space rock hitting a planet. First we predicted what was going to happen. Then we got some marbles, flour, ice-cream container and a ruler. We poured the flour into the container. Next we got a ruler and measured 0.60m, 0.80m and 1m and dropped a marble. Then we wrote our observations.
Last week on Friday Year 4 did an experiment on space. We were trying to simulate a rock hitting a planet. First we predicted what would happen. Then we put flour into an ice cream container and measured 0.60m and dropped a marble then we measured 0.80m and dropped a marble then we measured 1.0m and dropped a marble. Then we recorded our observations
For Group5’s Crater Experiment we first predicted what we thought would happen when a rock would hit a planet. Then we got the materials that were flour, an icecream container, marbles, a 30cm ruler and a metre ruler then we were ready to start the experiment.
The first thing we did was put the flour into the container at 5cm. Next we had to smooth the flour with a ruler. Then we measured accurately with a ruler at 0.6m, 0.8m and 1m. After we measured we dropped the marble at 0.6m and then we observed what we saw happen. Next we did the same thing but we measured 0.8m. Then we observed. We repeated this again with 1.0m. We had a camera and took photos and took a video of us doing the experiment. The experiment was great fun.
